(359 words) F.M. Dostoevsky in his novel Crime and Punishment showed how people become hostages of their ambitions. The main character was a kind and noble man: he pulled children out of the fire, donated the last money to the poor. But one theory confused him, and now the virtuous and generous youth decides to kill. The author does not allow the reader to understand the main reason for his act.
To understand Rodion, let us recall his life. Former law student Rodion Raskolnikov is starving and trying to find at least some money, because he has nothing to pay for the apartment. Once again, he decides to go to the old interest-bearing woman Alena Ivanovna to lay her father’s silver watch. Thoughts about the murder have been ripening in the hero’s head for a month and a half. Raskolnikov promises the old woman will soon return again, an unbearable sense of disgust leads the hero into a drinking room. There he meets Marmeladov and finds in his society an excuse for his theory: while the poor are tormented, the old woman-percussionist sucks out the last drops of blood from them.
Fate itself pushed the young man into this matter. One day, Raskolnikov thinks about life and the upcoming crime and accidentally hears an officer talking to a student about the fact that such a louse as an old percent-woman does not deserve life. If only someone would kill her, and the money can be given to the poor. He realized that fate itself was pushing him to take this step. However, after the crime, he never gave out the money, and could not take a step towards greatness, as he intended.
On the contrary, he panics and gets nervous. Rodion is in a panic, afraid of a sudden search, he takes all the stolen things and hides them under a stone in a deserted courtyard. After the student goes to his friend Razumikhin, he himself does not know why. He also decides that his friend is very ill. Indeed, Rodion fell ill from constant internal pain. Returning home, Rodion almost gets under the wheels. In the apartment he falls into oblivion, now and then wakes up and falls asleep, and in the morning he completely faints. So he realized that he did not pass the test for the superman. This test was the main goal of the hero.
The reader will find out the final answer only from the dialogue between Sonya and Rodion. Only before her could the hero reveal himself and complete a painful introspection. The result was terrible: the young man did not repent, but regretted that he could not step over the corpse. However, in the epilogue, he was still able to open his soul to God and a new life.
