Chapter i
Sukhodol is an attractive, exciting place for the narrator and his sister. The reason for this is the story of the nanny of Natalia, their father’s milk sister. She lived all her hard life in the Khrushchev estate: there she lost her parents, looked after the crazy aunt Tonya, fell in love.
But even after all the troubles, the storyteller with his sister, Natalia and even his father, who left there, with an incomprehensible force pulled back to their native places, to Sukhodol.
Chapter II
The narrator and his sister got into Sukhodol only in their late adolescence.
A rainstorm with blindingly fast lightning was then. The first person they met was the crazy Aunt Tonya, with her long sharp nose and crazy eyes looking like Baba Yaga. The small and fat Claudia Markovna, the wife of their uncle Pyotr Petrovich, joyfully called out and greeted them, and the kindly familiar woman Natalya bowed to them with a smile.
Chapter III
Often the narrator and his sister walked around Sukhodol, which enchanted them and its picturesque surroundings.
Returning home, they learned from Natalia the history of the estate, the fate of its inhabitants. And for a long, long time she was telling ...
Chapter iv
According to legend, the narrator’s great-grandfather moved from Kursk to Sukhodol when there was a solid forest all around.
But in the days of their grandfather, Pyotr Kirillich, the thickets were almost completely cut down, a house and a garden were built.
But there was no one to take care of the estate and the farm: Grandfather Pyotr Kirillich got mad either from love, or from the rain of apples that fell on him; their father, Arkady Petrovich, was gone hunting all day with Gervaska; Uncle, Petr Petrovich, the only one sent for training. So there was a house without owners, in the care of the yard.
Chapter v
Everything has changed with the arrival of Pyotr Petrovich, his comrades, Voitkevich and the alcoholic cook. Barin tried to seem a welcoming host and transformed life, made it more fun, festive; but it turned out he was inept.
Natalya fell in love with Peter, which destroyed her: she, stunned by beauty, stole his mirror to admire him, but they found the loss, she was cut off and sent to the link to Soshka's farm.
On the road, a lot of emotions raged in her: she wanted to hang herself, run away, but, bribing the torment of love, buried her in her soul and continued to live on.
Chapter vi
Pyotr Petrovich arranged a feast at Pokrov. But his grandfather prevented this: he molested all newly arrived guests, told everyone about the aunt's departure.
Everyone knew that story: Voitkevich courted Tonya, seduced her, and then just left, because of which the girl was crazy.
The feast lasted until the evening. Getting up early in the morning, Pyotr Kirillich began to move massive furniture, which woke Hervaska. During the quarrel, the man, "angry as hell," hit his grandfather in the chest. He fell to the corner of his temple and died.
Chapter VII
In the absence of Natalia, two more events take place: Pyotr Petrovich marries, and then the brothers go to war.
Two years later, the new lady, Claudia Markovna, sent Natalia back to look after the crazy Tonya.
Some time after returning, the girl recalled her link, Soshka was so different from Suhodol: the hut was neat and beautiful, the owners treated her as an equal. There she had two dreams that predicted her fate.
Chapter viii
It was joyful and exciting for Natalia to return. A lot has changed. And it was hard to believe in many things.
But a terrible foreboding of some kind of trouble bothered her.
A sorcerer was brought to Ton, who was supposed to cure her longing. But he helped for a short while.
In the summer, the owners did not return, due to the wound of Peter Petrovich. After rumors of war, Sukhodol began to fill with all sorts of tramps. Among them was Yushka, the "guilty monk."
Chapter xi
Although Yushka was a man of men, he did not work, but lived off boasting how God would send.
He, being in Sukhodol, “falls in love” with Natalia. Having met her once, Yushka said that he would come to her and she would not stop him. The first dream came true, and the woman, thinking that something inevitable was happening, was given to him every night. When Yushka got bored, he disappeared as quickly as he appeared. A month later, the heroine realized that she was pregnant.
In September, the brothers returned, and the next day the second dream came true: Sukhodolsky manor caught fire. Natalya, seeing the fire, ran there with all her might and stumbled upon someone dressed in a red zhupan and a Cossack hat. The horror that she experienced that evening freed her from the child.
After that, life faded. Tonya was taken to the relics, and she calmed down, like Natalya.
Subsequent rumors about the will changed Sukhodol, sowed discord between the brothers. Soon Peter Petrovich died: returning from Luneva, from his mistress, he fell under the hooves of a horse. The first to know this was Natalia, and the first to mourn him.
Chapter x
All that the narrator and sister heard about Sukhodol disappeared over time, collapsed. The estate began to die: the only inhabitants - Klavdia Markovna, Aunt Tonya, Natalya lived out their last days.
From the majestic Khrushchev family there were only unknown graves that descendants could not find.
